Chimney Before

The mortar between the bricks is loose and the lead flashings need replacing. Down the side the lead soakers have dropped down and the lead back gutter is leaking.

Chimney after

All the joints to the chimney have been ground out and repointed with mortar to ensure the chimney lasts. as long as this is caught early the chimney can avoid needing a full rebuild which is why chimney maintenance is important. As well as this all of the lead flashing were changed, with bigger lead soakers at the sides supplied. We also have bespoke specially made lead back gutters for all chimneys that require it. The lead is professionally welded for the back piece to ensure it sits properly around the chimney and doesn’t thin out in any areas, as corners are especially susceptible to tears and leaks.

Re-pointing and re-flaunching

Chimneys are often susceptible to the worst of weather conditions, causing the pointing to break down much quicker. We can completely grind out the chimney joints and re-point it to ensure your chimney will stand up to the elements. If required, we can re-flaunch the top of the chimney to ensure your pots stay solid.

This Chimney was leaking intpo the loft and soaking the timbers around it as the lead wasn’t appropriate for the way the tile rune. The ridge has been glued to the lead when it should be mortared and water has been getting through.

In the top picture you can see the extend of the damage. The lath (which seats the tile) is almost completely rotten and the felt has been riding up, as well as becoming a home for birds. We supplied a new damproof membrane to all areas of the chimney, and repaired the felt. After, we replaced the rotten section of lath.

The entire chimney was ground out, re-pointed, and re-flaunched (mortar around the pot/cowl). All the lead was replaced with bigger sections to get the tile coverage, and 2 extra tiles were added to either side of the chimney to fill in gaps that the birds could enter. The ridges adjacent to the chimney were then mortared on.

Chimney reduction and removal

We can also reduce and cap off chimneys as well as remove them completely to below roof level, If they’re no longer in use. This can often be a cheaper option than maintaining them.
